Vatnajökull the biggest ice cap in Europe covers an area of about 12.000 sq.km. or about 11% of Iceland and there is also the highest mountain peak in Iceland Hvannadalshnúkur (2110 meters ) . The glacier lagoon Jökulsárlón which in fact is a long and a deep fjord that has become visible as the glacier has been retreating is most often full of icebergs that are floating back and forth with the currents. There a good changes of seeing seals sunbathing on an iceberg or swimming in the lagoon. A boat trip (optional) in between the icebergs is an experience of a lifetime. There is no wonder that this unusual scenery has attracted film makers, some scenes of Hollywood films like “Die Another Day” ” A View to a Kill” and “Batman Begins” have been shot there. The so called “Diamond Beach” is located near the mouth of the lagoon. Icebergs of all sizes and forms are often seen on the black sand beach or floating on the rough waves of the Atlantic.

The North Atlantic is often very rough and strong currents are causing so called sneaker waves, so all caution should be taking when visiting the beach. The black beach has been popular among film makers and some scenes of the TV series “The Game of Thrones” have been filmed there.
