At the doorstep of the capital Reykjavik is the Reykjanes peninsula which is geologically the youngest part of Iceland and it is a very active volcanic area with lunar landscape, hots prings and amazing bird cliffs. The Atlantic Ridge the border line between the Euroasian and the North American Tectonic plates lies straight through the area. We wil also visit a typical Icelandic fishing village Grindavík where you willl learn about the daily life in Iceland and sustainable fishing . It is no wonder that the Reykjanes peninsula has been declared a UNESCO Geopark.
UNESCO Global Geoparks are single, unified geographical areas where sites and landscapes of international geological significance are managed with a holistic concept of protection, education and sustainable development. Their bottom-up approach of combining conservation with sustainable development while involving local communities is becoming increasingly popular. At present, there are 147 UNESCO Global Geoparks in 41 countries.
SInce the 19th of March 2021 did a small volcanic eruption begin at Fagradalsfjall near the village Grindavík , The eruption is currently what the Icelanders refer to as a “tourist-eruption” and it has already attracted a lot of people that have been hiking to the site of the eruption to witness this historical event and see this beautiful and dramatic phenomena.
